Let’s look at some of the reasons why we procrastinate. I used to think that people that don’t put actions behind their words are lazy and have little willpower. Little did I know that there can be much deeper roots in why we don’t act. I stumbled across Maria Sosa. She explores other reasons for procrastination than laziness.
- We are emotionally drained
- Adaptive mechanism: Growing up, uncertainty was common, planning/organisation often led to disappointment
- It is a way to manage anxiety short term (while creating more long-term)
- The task is not in alignment with internal wants/needs
- We don’t have (or don’t believe we have) the skillset to complete the task
- We are afraid of the outcome, what comes next
Once again, I believe what matters is understanding oneself and figuring out the real reason for procrastinating. Sometimes the answer could be that we simply don’t want it. Let’s be careful with jumping to conclusions too quickly and blaming ourselves for not acting on something. We first have to dig deeper and understand what is causing us to delay action.
